What is yoga?
Yoga is an ancient system of holistic health whose evidence dates as far back as 5,000 years. Translated, the word "yoga" means to yoke or bind, a combination of the mind and the body. The study of the postures is one of eight elements and is widely practiced in today's modern culture. Specifically, yoga postures are considered the original isometrics. Flexing and simultaneously stretching improves the muscle system, weight bearing bearing postures promote bone density and strength, focus and concentration sharpen the mind, and breath awareness eases the taxed nervous system. All together these combine for total body health.
What are the benefits of yoga?
People come to the yoga mat for a variety of reasons. Stress reduction, physical fitness, injury recovery, community, and self-exploration all find a place within the yoga experience.
Do I have to be flexible?
No! The yoga postures teach balance. Areas of the body that are still and tight become more flexible. Likewise weak areas will become stronger. A body does not need to accomplish bizarre shapes in order to find lasting health.
Is yoga a religion?
This is a common misconception. While the practice and study of Eastern in origin, its use and acceptance is worldwide. The introspective process that is experienced through the movements and quietness strengthen each individual’s spiritual connection. Deepening our self-awareness helps to reveal our true nature of love, kindness, strength , and clear presence of mind.
How do I find the right class for me?
There are as many different styles as there are yoga classes. Some are vigorous, while others are more relaxing. Your experience level is the key to finding the right class for you. If you have no experience, an introduction or beginning class is best. If necessary, speak to a teacher for your options.
How often should I go to a yoga class?
Many people find benefit with a class once or twice a week. As with any body-related practice, it is the consistency over time that will generate lasting positive changes. Your schedule and personal commitment will be the designating factors.
I see yoga as a science of the mind, a journey of the body, an experience of the heart, and an opportunity for the soul to explore itself more fully.
